Director's Blog - Are individual boiler machines worth the extra dosh?
Don’t get me wrong, I am in the school that agrees that infusion temperature is critical when making coffee – single estate blends seem to suffer particularly at the hands of fluctuating water temperature. However, individual boiler machines cost significantly more, which, in these difficult economic times, is further hampering sales.
Infusion temperatures are actually all about heat retention and the thickness of metals. It is possible to reduce manufacturing costs by making boilers and copper pipework from thinner metal. However, in a traditional machine with heat exchangers in the same boiler as the hot water, the temperature at the group head can vary, especially if the machine is used a lot for steam and hot water.
Bfc/Royal, which manufactures our Synchro machine range, uses a larger, 14 litre boiler with elongated heat exchangers to produce a machine with greater thermal stability. The copper in the boiler is thicker and the group heads are the original 4Kg brass heads rather than the 1.8Kg copies used in many cheaper machines. These features of the manufacturing specification contribute to stable brew temperatures at the group heads without the necessity to spend more money than is strictly necessary.
Of course, if you really want an individual boiler machine for precise temperature control, we can supply that too, it will just cost more. View our range of espresso machines here.
